For our two final assessment days, we will have one day devoted to English and the other day devoted to Social Studies. Both will not take the whole two hours. Please do your best to complete the Venn Diagram (click << there if you need to print off a new one) comparing the character of Ashley and Stewart in We Are All Made of Molecules (WAAMM).  You are responding to this statement: "Ashley and Stewart are very different characters in the novel." From our reading, how different are they actually? To what degree? Completely different? Mostly different? Somewhat? Use what you know so far (and read ahead if you want!) to complete the diagram to prepare you to write a compare-contrast paragraph this week. We will discuss more this week. -Mr. F

Hi Grade 8s, I have attached my feedback on your Japan paragraphs. Please look the slides over every time you write a paragraph and make sure you have done everything to the best of your ability. Do not beat yourself up about your score! More formal paragraph writing is a skill that comes with practice and time. You will have more opportunities to work on this! Most students will improve by one point by the end of the year. For example: You could go from a 2 to a 3, or a 3 to a 4. Paragraph Feedback Also, check over the 6 point scale and do you best to guess what your paragraph would get out of six.

As a little side project for your civilization... Each student will be creating a myth (similar to a short story) for their civilization. Each student should write a different story. Assignment Handout Use this plot diagram to plan your story. Homework: complete the graphic organizer (plot diagram) for Monday December 3rd.

Your Civilization, of course, needs a map so we can see what it looks like on paper (literally)! DUE TUESDAY NOVEMBER 13th Your map must have: -a clear purpose (to show the layout and geography of your civilization) -continents (land) and oceans (water) -a legend  of symbols and signs on the map (at least 10) -latitude and longitude -a scale for reference (for example: 1 cm : 100 km) -cities with names (at least 3 or 4) -rivers and lakes with names -at least 3 or 4 other land features with names (mountains, plateaus, plains, bay, etc.) -borders or other divisions (provinces, states, prefectures, etc.) -a compass rose -forests/national parks -any other ideas you might have! Generally, your map should have all the required parts, be clear and organized, not have much empty space and look presentable! You will complete your draft copy by Monday November 5th, your good copy will be due November 8th. You can do you completed version on the computer if you like, just ...

This year, we will be creating what is called a “Commonplace Book.” It is a blank notebook of your choosing where you will be putting creative and poetic writing pieces. Example:  https://goo.gl/images/MDPx1u UPDATE: Your Commonplace Journal should have.... 1. Your chosen quote. 2. The meaning and/or origin of you first name and last name 3. Your reflection on the shinrin-yoku (forest walk). “I felt before...” and “I felt after...” 4. Two doodles, ideally, on the back pages of your journal. Don’t worry if they are somewhere else in the book. 5. See A. below.... Homework for Thursday, November 15th: A. Make sure you have all the above. B. Go on a “shinrin-yoku” and find something to glue/attach into your journal -> could be a leaf, a stick, a flower, etc.
